MailTribune.com: Jerry Joseph & Jackmormons - The songwriter speaks out about his music and the long road
Some compare Jerry Joseph's songwriting to Dylan's, but Joseph doesn't. While Dylan chronicled an American generation's unrest, Joseph says his songs come from a more personal place.
"Most people say my songs are about Jesus, junkies and sex," Joseph says. "I don't know if that's really true. I like artists that mix stuff up. When spiritual outrage smacks into the profane. Whether it's Marvin Gaye or Prince. I listen to all kinds of music, probably too much music."
Joseph rarely sets out to make a point with a song, he says. But sometimes listeners find his music applicable to the human condition.
"My politics can be pretty controversial, but I gave up trying to explain what the songs are about a long time ago," Joseph says. "Someone's interpretation of a song can sometimes be cooler than what I intended it to be. Listening to music is like looking at art. Was Picasso trying to depict a scene of war, or was he just painting a portrait of his girlfriend?"
The Washington Post wrote that Joseph ... "sounds occasionally like John Mellencamp's older, wiser and psychologically mixed-up sibling ... (he) writes complex, image-laden songs and infuses them with plenty of attitude, soulfulness and swagger."

Cosmo Sex School Records is pleased to announce the brand new release from Charge EP (Jerry Joseph, Bret Mosley, Steve Drizos).
The Denmark Veseys' Jerry Joseph and Steve Drizos welcome Brooklyn-based singer/songwriter Bret Mosley in this 7-track collaboration, which includes two covers, two new Joseph originals, two Mosley originals, a co-write—the title track, which commemorates election night of Nov '08. The predominantly acoustic effort runs the gamut from the intense, raw “Charge” and “What You Feel”, to the quirky, playful “Isabella Bird”, to Joseph’s stark a cappella rendition of the traditional spiritual “On Time God”. Recorded over the course of three days at Old Soul Studio in Catskill, NY, with a live performance setup and first-take vocals - the project used vintage technology throughout. Tracked on analog tape, nothing digital was introduced until the final mix was burned to CD.

The Denmark Veseys featuring Jerry Joseph & Steve Drizos *ON SALE NOW* |
Cosmo Sex School Records is pleased to announce the brand new release from The Denmark Veseys (Jerry Joseph & Steve Drizos).
The Denmark Veseys is a Portland, Oregon based duo consisting of acclaimed singer/songwriter Jerry Joseph (Little Women, The Jackmormons, Stockholm Syndrome) and drummer/percussionist Steve Drizos (Dexter Grove). A slight departure from Joseph's past projects, The Denmark Veseys' self-titled debut introduces a new pop sensibility while still retaining the raw energy that has defined his career. The album, recorded at Chase Park Transduction Studios in Athens, GA and produced by Dave Barbe (Drive-By Truckers, REM, Son Volt), was created in a live performance atmosphere. The Denmark Veseys completed the record in just six days, capturing a true representation of the band's sound. A sound that lies somewhere between Sly & The Family Stone's “Family Affair” and Peter Gabriel's “I Can't Remember” with a big tip of the hat to the late, great Chris Whitley.
The Denmark Veseys hit the streets in February 2008. Exclusively at Cosmo Sex School Records we have a limited number of SIGNED copies available for $15.98. The regular CD is available now (un-signed) $12.98 at Cosmo Sex School Records and at your favorite independent record stores.

Honest Tune: Jerry Joseph and the truth about Denmark Vesey
Sitting down talking to Jerry Joseph is always an interesting experience. For a man that many know simply as the seemingly angry anti-hippie songwriter that got his big break when Widespread Panic started performing his songs, Joseph is actually amazingly subdued, incredibly well rounded, and just about the most intellectual individual one could ever hope to meet.
During our most recent interview, which took place as Joseph embarked on his latest tour with drummer Steve Drizos, we discussed the duo's forthcoming CD, the subsequent naming of their band, songwriting, his recent trip to Nepal, and what the future holds for the man with a seemingly endless string of rock-n-roll melodies waiting to roll off the tip of his tongue.
