Honest Tune: Jerry Joseph and the truth about Denmark Vesey
Sitting down talking to Jerry Joseph is always an interesting experience. For a man that many know simply as the seemingly angry anti-hippie songwriter that got his big break when Widespread Panic started performing his songs, Joseph is actually amazingly subdued, incredibly well rounded, and just about the most intellectual individual one could ever hope to meet.
During our most recent interview, which took place as Joseph embarked on his latest tour with drummer Steve Drizos, we discussed the duo's forthcoming CD, the subsequent naming of their band, songwriting, his recent trip to Nepal, and what the future holds for the man with a seemingly endless string of rock-n-roll melodies waiting to roll off the tip of his tongue.

Jambase.com: Jerry Joseph & Jackmormons - West Coast Tour Dates
Jambase.com:
Jerry Joseph is a warrior. His battles with addiction, years of self-destruction and broken dreams have all been well documented, but instead of buckling under the pressure Jerry sucked it up and wrote songs. He's been on the road ever since, and he's one of the best live performers you are likely to ever see. It doesn't matter if it's solo, with his Jackmormons, Stockholm Syndrome, The Denmark Veseys as a duo with Dave Schools (Widespread Panic) or any other of the various configurations he fronts. Those in The Biz have been aware of Jerry's genius for a long time (Widespread Panic being the easy touchstone for all the songs they've covered) but he's never received the accolades he so greatly deserves.
Like they say, one man's trash is another's treasure and because Jerry Joseph continues to do his thing under the radar of the Big Time, you get to see him in intimate bars. If the music business was a "fair" place, based on "talent" Jerry would be playing for thousands, instead we get our minds blown with a few close friends. Jerry Joseph and the Jackmormons are setting out for a West Coast tour on May 24 in Portland, OR, from there he'll head down the coast hitting the major (and not so major) markets on his way to SoCal where the tour ends on June 6 in Pioneertown, CA.

Tuscon Weekly - The Denmark Veseys, Bret Mosley @ Plush
The Denmark Veseys were, in a way, an inspired booking for the weekend before Martin Luther King Jr. Day and Barack Obama's inauguration. The duo takes its name from an American slave who bought his freedom with lottery winnings, became a carpenter and co-founded an African Methodist Episcopal church. He was executed with some of his collaborators when authorities uncovered his plans for a massive slave rebellion.
By appearances, neither The Denmark Veseys' drummer Steve Drizos nor singer-songwriter Jerry Joseph could claim any direct ethnic or cultural connection to their namesake. Still, however obscure the reference, and despite his sprawling erudition, Joseph’s gut-felt delivery and rough emotionalism lay waste to genteel assumptions about how other people live. Had he been around in King’s time, he’d surely have been an asset to the civil rights movement.
Now, Joseph is perhaps most effective, and disturbing, when limning lives dominated by substance abuse, a frequent theme in his catalog. That’s a master whose torment he’s experienced personally; he recalled a stay at Sierra Tucson (“a very nice rehab”) by way of introducing a song inspired by one of his co-residents there—a hockey player from Detroit who sang in the shower. Joseph wrote the song, “New Psychology of Love,” without benefit of a guitar, because instruments were forbidden in the program.

Flagstaff Live: Manic Street Preacher - The highs and lows of the notorious Jerry Joseph
It’s hard to keep up with Jerry Joseph. He’s best known for his role in the immensely popular club band, Little Women, who blazed a hot trail through the Rockies and the Northwest from the mid ’80s through the early ’90s, and later, the Jackmormons and Stockholm Syndrome (with Widespread Panic’s Dave Schools).
Recently, he’s been touring as a duo with drummer Steve Drizos (Dexter Grove) as the Denmark Veseys, named for a freed slave who planned what would have been the U.S.’s largest slave revolt (complete with genocide) before being caught and executed. Their debut, on Cosmo Sex School Records, was produced by Dave Barbe (REM, Drive-By Truckers, Son Volt) and showcases the seamless rapport of Joseph and Drizos. It’s a beautifully caustic poetic autopsy of modern life told from the perspective of one of rock music’s most unsung heroes.
Meanwhile, the Veseys joined Dobro player/singer/songwriter Bret Mosley to collaborate on an extended-length EP, Charge, also available from Cosmo Sex School Records. Joseph, Drizos and Mosley are touring the West featuring cuts from both discs, and dipping generously into the deep back catalogue of Joseph’s songs.
I had the pleasure of interviewing the wily, rakish Joseph via cell phone, while he strode briskly down the icy streets of Harlem.

Salt Lake Tribune: Music: Jackmormons to take over Bar Deluxe
Rocker Jerry Joseph returns to Utah for two-night stand.
In these tough economic times, Charlie Newman, booker of talent at Bar Deluxe, said there are plenty of musicians he wouldn't even book for one night. But Newman booked Oregon-based singer-songwriter Jerry Joseph for not just one, but two nights. "I've never seen him play a s-----" show, said Newman, who has known Joseph for 20 years.
Besides his showmanship, the straight-ahead rocker is virtually a native son of Utah. Joseph lived in the state for several years, spending time in a Utah jail when he was 16. His children were born in Logan. One of his albums is called "Salt Lake City." He kicked a heroin addiction while living here. And, not least, he named his band the Jackmormons. Joseph said his audience at the shows will be "the people I owe money to. Or perhaps they showed up at the wrong show." But there's no reason to believe the rocker's self-deprecating humor.
"He has a lot of friends here and has cultivated a lot of relationships over the years," Newman said. "I wouldn't be surprised if this is his top market in the country. I would book him at the Zephyr and he would sell out all three shows over the weekend. I'm seeing second-generation Jerry Joseph fans. He's Salt Lake's working man's Springsteen."

Blurt Magazine: Jerry Joseph Hosts NY eve bash in NYC
Frontman for the Jackmormons, Stockholm Syndrome and the Denmark Veseys pulls out all the stops.
Three days of fun from BLURT faves Jerry Joseph and the Jackmormons. The songwriter's New Year's Eve bash is usually held in Costal Rica, but this year it'll be in the Big Apple at The Delancey - and the '08 send-off will be preceded by a pair of shows at Crash Mansion on Dec. 29 and 30.
Joseph, drummer Steve Drizos and bassist JR Ruppel will be joined by opener Bret Mosley for all three nights as well as various other special guests. Watch for the kinds of fireworks fans of the Jackmormoms, Stockholm Syndrome and the Denmark Veseys (Joseph's three outfits) have become accustomed to. Full details below.
The trio has been touring and recording together and plan to release an ep, Charge, early in 2009.
Not unwarranted press hype: "The Jackmormons' frontman and lead songwriter Jerry Joseph is the 21st-century equivalent of a tribal medicine man. He'll hand you a sonic peyote cocktail and proceed to dance around a swirling bonfire of electric guitars. Bass and drums pound out a beat to match your rising pulse as Joseph works himself into a sometimes eight-minute-long frenzy of Hendrix sounds and dark imagery."

Glide Magazine - Hidden Track Interview: Jerry Joseph
"I'll state my opinion any time I fucking choose."
Those aren't the exact lyrics to Light Is Like Water, my favorite Jerry Joseph song, but that's how I'll always remember the verse from the last time I heard Joseph do it live (sometime around Stockholm Syndrome's inaugural tour in 2004).
That line sounds exactly like Joseph, the incisive folk-rocker with the serious songwriting chops and the lived-in voice, best known for Little Women, the Jackmormons and numerous other solo projects, not to mention his longstanding association with Widespread Panic. And the song's overall attributes might describe Joseph himself, as well as his curious career: longwinded, tender, pointed, hopeful, irascible, cynical, soulful—and singular.
Hidden Track caught up with Joseph at a snowed-in tour stop in Salt Lake City late last week. His 2008 is far from over; having revived the Jackmormons name with a modified lineup, he'll close out the year in his adopted home of New York City, booked for Dec. 29 and 30 at Crash Mansion and New Year's Eve at the Delancey Lounge. If you're in the area and haven't yet made your plans, well, we'd be remiss if we didn't recommend it.

Rocktober: Get Out And Vote! on JamBase
Is this election different than past elections, why or why not?
Jerry Joseph:
I think every generation likes to think theirs is the most important moment and I am certainly guilty of that. Every election there are so many insanely crucial issues on the table it's dumbfounding as always the things that hold the public interest: flag pins, horny teenagers, Hanoi in the '60s while arguably Rome is burning. Unfortunately, that's been the American electoral experience for my lifetime - 51% voter turnout, I mean please. Two books that helped me get a little clearer picture this past year (paperback by the time I read them) are "The World Is Flat" by Tom Friedman and "The Shock Doctrine" by Naomi Klein. If Klein's book is true then this could be the moment we recover from the shock of neo conservative capitalism and fundamentalism. Are we smart enough to see the opportunity? I tend to be more pessimistic. I live in Harlem and everyone here seems to firmly believe that at the end of the day "Americans ain't voting for no nigga." If that's true, then sit back and enjoy the flames, the difference this time is how little will be left to burn by the next election.
What is the relationship between music and politics - and how, if at all, has this relationship affected your music?
Everything is richer with music in the background. Weddings and funerals and sex and drug use and yes politics. Though there are examples, Bob Marley being the obvious one, of a direct correlation between the two, it's generally an embarrassing joke that people take their political cues from musicians. I mean, not that I'm any good at this, but I make a living jumping around and acting like a 16-year-old. I would be loath to think I had anyone's ear. However, by design of the job, I am delusional every night and think maybe I do have a soapbox and should use it. That borders on the pathetic, case in point: in the '80s all I had to do was say "Free Mandela!" and I was a conscious dub warrior... That being said, I would love to write politically and intelligently, where the songs don't come off like a series of Southeast Portland bumper stickers. Hard to do and I lack discipline. Easier to run around with Immortal Technique blasting out of whatever and hope that covers it.
If you could speak directly to all American voters, what would you say?
You get the government you deserve. If McCain wins this one the only issue will be which motherfucker is holding the marshmallows?

*Honest Tune*: Jerry Joseph - cutting a duo CD
Jerry Joseph and drummer Steve Drizos are currently hard at work in Dave Barbe's Chase Park Transduction studio in Athens, Georgia recording a CD of new material, most of which has been written in just the last two weeks. Joseph says plans for this session are to record two songs in full each day, much like "cutting both sides of a 45."
The sessions commenced with the recording of "Letter to Chico," on July 24. An upbeat track, "Chico" features Joseph's uniquely melodic vocals, filled with his trademark angst. While the song may never be a massive commercial hit, Joseph delivers a song that all the young Ramones wanna-bes are dying to write.
Joseph said that "Anybody that plays on the record is going to have to play an instrument that they don't usually play." Stay tuned for more details...

*Willamette Week Online - LOCAL CUT* Jerry Joseph - "April Nineteenth"
[HONEST MUSIC] We live in disingenuous times. From our cowboy president on down to the support-our-troops "country" anthems that clutter the FM dial (the proceeds of which march nobly into the pockets of their down-home millionaire performers), ours is a country full of apple-pie hucksters who wouldn't know America if it punched them in the face. The point is, it feels really good to hear someone whose words come from actual life experience rather than the Heritage Foundation. Jerry Joseph's new album, April Nineteenth, isn't perfect, but it carries the weight of authenticity—quite a heavy weight indeed...click here to read the full review.
