Jerry Joseph & Jackmormons - New Year's Run - Portland, Oregon!
Hey hey kiddos!! Ok … I made it to Portland! As of yesterday morning, that was very much in question. Thank you to my friends John and Amber for providing the emergency taxi for my family and myself. Tonight is round one of the JMO 4 night run at Dante’s … we are a go. I suggest we look at every show this week as the only or last, as who knows what happens in the next 10 min. I’ve read all the different bands canceling, often with the reason being concern for fans. Again, I believe my fans (tho fucking lunatics) to be intelligent and caring and empathetic. I / we feel strongly that we can have faith in the people around us. Not vaxxed? Don’t come. Not boosted? Wear a double mask and don’t drink out of the Kamikaze gun. Assess your comfort level, no wet kissing strangers (Joe). We don’t feel that “an abundance of caution” means the music stops. We feel it means take personal responsibility and look out for your friends and neighbors. Covid is here to stay … so I propose we learn to live in this new world without sacrificing art and companionship. Zero judgment if you choose to stay home. We applaud you … you’re being smart and taking care of yourself and your needs. We very much hope to see you tonight and the rest of the week. If not, God willing, there will be a lot more opportunities. God bless you all. Love. Jerry and the JMOS

"Jerry, to me is a cult figure who could, in some alternate reality, have easily been one of the biggest stars in the world. One of the greatest live performers I have ever seen and long one of my favorite songwriters." - Patterson Hood
Jerry Joseph released The Beautiful Madness in August 2020, produced by Patterson Hood, it features Patterson and various members of the Drive-By Truckers - Mike Cooley, Brad Morgan, Matt Patton - and Jay Gonzalez as his backing band along with others, including Jason Isbell who lends his guitar-playing to "Dead Confederate". The album received much critical acclaim including being chosen as the Americana Album of the Month by Uncut Magazine, was in the Top 20 of 2020 by Glide Magazine, one of the Top Albums of 2020 by Paste Magazine and the #1 album of 2020 from Routes and Branches.
Originally conceived as a reflection on the middle years of marriage, the album ended up as an unflinching political commentary on our country and world. The masterful "Dead Confederate", is told in the defiant voice of a confederate statue as it is being torn down. Patterson Hood writes in the liner notes, "it’s one of the best songs about prejudice and racial hatred that I have ever heard", Jason Isbell, who plays guitar on it, has said it is one of the Top Five songs written about the South and Geoffrey Himes wrote in his thoughtful deep dive on the song in Paste, "It’s a song guaranteed to offend a lot of folks". "Sugar Smacks" is an angry magnum opus about the state of the world today that Patterson called “the most punk rock song I’ve heard in twenty years (or more)." The powerful video that accompanies the song is made up of footage from Jerry's travels to places not included on most people's destination wish lists. See it here.
Joseph and the Jackmormons - Steve Drizos and Steven James Wright - spent the pandemic recording some of their classic tracks that were never recorded in a studio - some were previously released on live records or were frequently on set lists, but they never found a home on any studio record. Each song was recorded at The Panther in Portland, OR, and features special guests Jenny Conlee-Drizos and Eric Martinez. The band released one song per month exclusively to their Panther Tracks subscribers. It was a great way to connect with fans and offer them something special while there were no live shows for them to attend.
